Life West staff helping at the Alameda Country Food Bank
On Friday afternoon, I had the chance to visit the Alameda County Food Bank with a few of my coworkers. It was my first time at a food bank, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the organization was very experienced with handling volunteers; the whole process was incredibly smooth, even before we reached the parking lot, and this efficiency continued throughout our time there.
Our task for the day was straightforward: we were to sort large sacks of carrots into smaller, portion-sized bags while discarding any rotten or inedible produce. While there, I also learned a lot about the organization and the statistics surrounding those experiencing hunger. An unexpected benefit from volunteering was being able to connect with coworkers I usually don’t get to interact with. Even though we were there for three hours, the time flew by, and the experience of preparing food for the community was deeply fulfilling. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I think others would also find joy in doing it as well.
