OAA Communication

Across the span of just one week in March, there were two mass shootings in the United States that resulted in 18 people being killed—six of them Asian women, adding to the sadness, anxiety, fear, and anger surrounding the increase in verbal harassment and physical assaults against Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the families, loved ones, friends, and communities of the victims surrounding these two tragedies. We also firmly stand against bias-motivated violence, racism, and xenophobia of any kind as JED supports efforts to stop hate and violence against Asian and AAPI communities.

If you or one of your peers or students are experiencing signs of distress, text START to 741-741 or call 1-800-273-TALK (8253) for a confidential conversation anytime. For some resources to support AAPI students and campus peers, click here for mental health and anti-racism resources to support AAPI communities.

We encourage everyone on campus to look out for each other and reach out for support at this time. We also encourage everyone to educate themselves on ways to provide a safe and healthy environment for Asian and AAPI students and their families and engage in safe methods to actively call out injustices. We believe that feeling safe and knowing that our friends, family, and community members are safe are essential to maintaining our mental health. Let’s continue to support one another and take actions to promote mental health, inclusion, and safety for all.

Yours in health,

The JED Team
